Renaissance Woman:

A woman who is interested in and knows a lot about many things.
— Merriam-Webster Dictionary

I’ve dabbled in or dove into a great many things.

Let’s start when I was a child.

When I was a kid I loooooved whales and dolphins. Like was obsessed. My favorite was humpback whales. They were so chill and slow moving and gorgeous (kind of like me ;). So I wanted to be a marine biologist. But then that meant I had to move away from my family to an ocean which I didn’t want to do.

So my dream eventually switched to being an airline pilot because I didn’t think there were enough women pilots. Soon I threw that out the window because I didn’t have much interest in flying planes only in the reasoning behind ‘there need to be more female pilots because there aren’t enough - therefore I need to do that’ (which isn’t a good reason to do something at all).

I always liked doing things against the grain. If other people were doing it, I wasn’t going to. If there were too many men doing something, then I was going to do it! (or I was going to at least complain about it.)

In high school, I was an avid a fan of recycling and very concerned over saving the planet. I was a vegetarian (mainly for animal welfare, but I more often explained it was for environmental reasons - no one could make fun of me for that) and was a member of Environmental Studies Club and Environ-thon where we competed in topics like biology, soil science, and wildlife.

Then in college, I shut down. I didn’t want to be there, I didn’t know what I should do, I was afraid and I didn’t do anything but go to my classes, draw, and watch bad TV. My first year, I took calculus and I liked it so much I decided to major in math. My second year, I was in Calc III when I realized I didn’t like it and what do math majors do in the end?

But I was always interested in physics and astrology, so I though about going into engineering. I wanted the glamorous job of designing roller coasters at Disneyland. But if I didn’t get that, it seemed like too much schooling to ultimately sit at a desk and design molds for plastic parts.

I finally decided to major in Horticulture because of my environmental interests and it seemed like the most feasible career (which in retrospect doesn’t seem like a feasible career at all).

Ultimately, it seemed like everyone hated their jobs, and all I wanted to do was something where I didn’t hate my job.

All along, I worked in theatre - building sets and working stage crew. I always wanted to run the lights, but there was one guy who’s dad ran lights and he was the lights guy and he scared me too much. So I never asked anyone for help to learn what I actually wanted - I just stayed in the safe area of painting sets because that’s where they needed the most help.

After college, I became a waitress, which surprisingly I loved. After being such a shy kid, I couldn’t believe that I was running around to tables being outspoken, talking to other people first, smiling and being nice.

Then i dated a guy, who didn’t like that I worked weekends, so I got a desk job. And guess what?

I hated it.

So I hired a coach and found out that theatre had a hold on me and I loved working in events and also I loved yoga.

So I went to get my yoga teaching certificate and I got a job taking tickets at a music venue.

I dabbled with the thought of being a boat mechanic or captain. Then I could sit on the water all day every day, but mechanics are never on the water and captains have a lot of responsibility.

I’ve always wavered between math/science and art/music.

I’ve worked as an event producer, web designer, musician, and horticulturist.

I run a plant event company called, Horti-Craft which offers fun workshops to create plant-based arts & crafts for the home.

I also build websites for musicians, co-produces Abbey Road on the River, a Beatles, and 60’s inspired music festival, and plays cello in various cover bands.
