How to make money digitally as a musician

The last post was a lot about how to survive with all your free time as a musician.

But how can you best monetize all this free time?

I’ll give you some tips on how you can spend some of your time on making money digitally.

  1. Offer to write songs for cash.

People are having birthdays in the next couple weeks, but there will be no parties, so this is a great idea for people to buy for birthday!

  2. Join Patreon.

Offer exclusive content and bonuses like special videos, exclusive songs, or even swag like stickers or shirts in exchange for a certain cash amount per month.

  3. Go Live.

To keep your fans engaged online, go live on your Facebook page or start a Twitch account and go live once or twice per week. You can play music, answer people’s questions and comments, and ask for tips through Patreon. You’ll gain some fans who will buy your music or merch in the future.

  4. Sell your digital music and merch on your website.

You probably already have music for sale online, but how about demos or other hidden gems you haven’t uploaded yet? And… if you have a stock of shirts, stickers, buttons at home, sell those on your website. Or come up with some cool mockup designs and say they’ll be sent in April.

  5. License your music.

Find a platform like Broadjam to put your music on or write new songs that could be bought and used for promotional videos, shows, or movies.

  6. Offer lessons online.

A lot of kids will be home for the next couple of weeks. If you both have instruments and smart phones, you can teach through the internet.
